Start your trip in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, Temescal. The neighborhood has recently boomed as somewhat of a hipster haven with trendy bars, cafes and dive bars opening in renovated historic buildings. No matter what kind of food you are after, whether it be Korean BBQ, fried chicken sandwiches, or a sweet treat (Curbside Creamery is always great for an afternoon sugar hit), you will not be disappointed. Temescal is a melting pot of culture and the best way to experience it is on foot. Spend a few hours walking through the streets and exploring old churches, vibrant murals and some of the many eclectic boutiques and shops. The area also hosts a popular year-round farmers market on Sunday and is the perfect place to gather some snacks for a picnic at Lake Merritt.
Next head to Oakland’s answer to Fisherman’s wharf, Jack London Square. The waterfront neighborhood is known for its beautiful scenery, fantastic food and lively events. The area is named after the famous Oakland author, Jack London, and there even is a replica of his log cabin that he lived in during his expedition to Alaska in the center of the square. Along with a variety of eateries and bars, the area is home to the USS Potomac, Franklin D. Roosevelts presidential yacht during World War Two, which now hosts tours of the Bay and stunning sunset cruises.
Oakland has a variety of entertainment options from you to choose from during your trip, including a range of historic theaters, sporting events or art festivals. If you are there during baseball season, catching an Oakland A’s game is a must do activity. Try and sit with super fans in Section 149 for an authentic afternoon of baseball and enjoy a number of team anthems, choreographed dances and musical instruments. So, grab a hotdog and a beer and get ready to take that Insta pic.
For a night of live music, be dazzled by the recently restored Fox Theatre, which from 1928 up until the 1970s was a movie theatre. The theatre is now a popular concert venue for local and international music acts, ranging from Kylie Minogue to Green Day. Similarly, the Paramount Theatre often hosts classic film nights, with movies like The Breakfast Club and Animal House for a kick of nostalgia, as well as being home to the Oakland Symphony and Oakland Ballet.
If you are visiting Oakland on the first Friday the month, make sure to head to the monthly street festival on Telegraph Avenue, from West Grand to 27th Street. Walk through the free arts festival hosted by the KONO district and enjoy five blocks of live music, art and food trucks!
