Start your trip in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, Temescal. The neighborhood has recently boomed as somewhat of a hipster haven with trendy bars, cafes and dive bars opening in renovated historic buildings. Temescal is a melting pot of culture and the best way to experience it is on foot. Spend a few hours walking through the streets and exploring old churches, vibrant murals and some of the many eclectic boutiques and shops. The area also hosts a popular year-round farmers market on Sunday and is the perfect place to gather some snacks for a picnic at Lake Merritt.

Next head to Oakland’s answer to Fisherman’s wharf, Jack London Square. The waterfront neighborhood is known for its beautiful scenery, fantastic food and lively events. The area is named after the famous Oakland author, Jack London, and there even is a replica of his log cabin that he lived in during his expedition to Alaska in the center of the square. Along with a variety of eateries and bars, the area is home to the USS Potomac, Franklin D.
