Discover all there is to see and do, from downtown to the very best attractions in Orlando. This sunny city is a great option for just about any traveler, as it is great for a family, group of friends, or relaxing solo trip. Located in central Florida, it’s most famous for its theme parks - there are more than a dozen just waiting to be explored - but there are plenty of other things to see and do, too.
Universal Orlando is one of the most visited attractions in the city. The resort includes two theme parks (Universal Studios Florida and Universals’ Islands of Adventure) as well as a waterpark, Volcano Pay, and hotels. Kids and kids at heart will love the magic and wonder of Universal Studios Florida, which brings childhood dreams to life. The original concept behind the theme park was to “ride the movies”, and there are still many film-themed rides today, including the incredibly popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley.
Universal is the only theme park actually inside the city limits of Orlando, but the others are still major draws for city tourism, particularly the Walt Disney World Resort, which is around 21 miles southwest of downtown Orlando. Disney World is one of the most popular resorts in the world, and with good reason. It has four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom), two water parks, and a host of hotels. If you only have time to visit one of the Disney parks, make it Magic Kingdom, which has the classic fairytale castle and exhilarating rides like Space Mountain.
But it’s not just about theme parks in Orlando - there are plenty of other places of interest, too. International Drive is the main thoroughfare and tourist strip in the city, and where you’ll find most of the best attractions in Orlando. Head to The Wheel at ICON Park Orlando, a 400-foot tall Ferris wheel giving you an incredible panorama over the city and beyond. Opened in 2015, it has multiple capsules which carry up to 15 passengers each, with one full circuit taking around 18 minutes.
Orlando is a hotspot for music and the performing arts. There are thriving hip-hop, rock and reggae scenes in the city, and there are two professional orchestras in Orlando, the Orlando Symphony Orchestra, and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.
If you are interested in indoor activities in Orlando, there’s a thriving theater scene, including professional and community options. Some of the best include the Central Florida Ballet, Orlando Shakespeare Theater and Orlando Repertory Theater, whilst the theater departments at the local universities, University of Central Florida and Rollins College, are a big draw for budding young actors, meaning there is a hive of young, local talent in the city.
Every May, the city plays host to the Orlando International Fringe Theater Festival. This 14-day event is the longest-running American Fringe Festival and showcases some of the best theater, music, dance and art shows in the US across a number of different programs, so whether you’re looking for kids’ shows or cutting-edge theater, you’re sure to find something you love.
Other cultural and art attractions in the city include places like the Orlando Science Center, the Skeletons: Museum of Osteology, the Orlando Museum of Art, and Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art.
Theme park fans will never get bored in Orlando, but if you want to explore what else Florida has to offer, you’ll find plenty of options in the surrounding areas.
One of the best attractions is NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, roughly an hour from Orlando. Here you can explore the visitor center to discover the heroes and legends of past space travel, and discover what the future holds.
For something completely different, take a FlixBus to Daytona Beach, less than an hour’s journey by coach. Daytona Beach is on the Atlantic coast and is a great place to spend some time relaxing, soaking up the sun or watching some NASCAR at the Daytona International Speedway.
Historic St. Augustine is also worth a visit. It lays claim to being the oldest city in the USA, and you can see the Spanish influence in its striking architecture. There are also sandy beaches, the 17th-century Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, and unspoiled Anastasia State Park with more than 1,600 acres of beaches and sand dunes to explore.
