Flix North America Partners with Green Energy to Install Solar Panels on Long-Distance Buses in the United States
+++ Expanded collaboration advances sustainable travel and reduces carbon emissions
DALLAS, September 23, 2024 -- Flix North America Inc., the parent company of the long-distance bus service providers FlixBus and Greyhound, has partnered with Green Energy, a global solar company, to install roof-mounted solar panels on its intercity buses. This initiative aligns with Flix’s commitment to advance sustainable and affordable travel for everyone.
As part of a pilot program, FlixBus buses operating between Houston and Dallas, as well as Houston and New Orleans, are the most recent in the company’s North American fleet to implement this new technology. Plans are underway to expand this initiative to additional markets across the country in the near term.
“Environmentally responsible operations are a core value for Flix, and we’ve been consistently pushing the boundaries of intercity transportation with innovative solutions that can help us reduce our impact,” said Jay Miller, head of business development, west region at Flix North America. “Building on the success we’ve seen with our European fleet, we’re thrilled to expand our partnership and bring this technology to the U.S. in yet another key step toward achieving our sustainability goals.”
By integrating solar technology, Flix’s buses will reduce idling, lower diesel consumption, cut carbon dioxide emissions, and double battery life. Additionally, using the charge controller with an Internet of Things (IoT) solution enables Flix to monitor solar production, diesel savings and carbon dioxide reduction, as well as gather and analyze valuable data for ongoing improvements.
“Expanding the use of solar panels on buses across the United States, Flix and Green Energy demonstrate how innovation, sustainability, and profitability can go hand in hand,” said James Armstrong, president & chief executive officer of the Americas at Green Energy. “This partnership is a great example of how modern technology can contribute to a more sustainable future for the transportation and long-distance travel industry.”
Flix’s sustainability strategy is deeply integrated into the company’s operations, with a strong focus on fleet transformation through alternative drives, a modern fuel-efficient fleet, and collaboration with bus partners and key industry players. The company aims to reach net zero by 2040 in Europe and by 2050 globally.

About Green Energy
Green Energy, a Danish green tech company, was founded in 2017 with a clear purpose: to reduce the use of fossil fuels and promote green mobility by utilizing renewable energy. From the start, the company had a vision to reduce CO2 emissions by 50 million tons by 2050 and has since committed to encouraging a more cost-effective and sustainable transport sector. Green Energy has developed a solar panel solution specifically tailored for life on the road to achieve these goals. It includes the latest CIGS solar panels and a charge controller with an IoT solution that enables monitoring and reporting of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions through a mobile application. This solution ensures significant fuel savings, reduced CO2 emissions, increased comfort and efficiency, and less wear and tear on the generator and battery, turning sustainability into profitability.
